New babblings

Here we are pretty much near the end of May 2014 and the weather sucks, so much for global warming (do not get me started on this). So we had our trip for the Douglaston Run in Pulaski, NY all set up as we had done over the years for April and it was cancelled due to high water, this of course was due to the extremely cold, hard and long winter. It was two weeks before they reopened the private stretch of water and our trip fell apart. Anyway, we switched gear and booked a few days (3 days) at Tall Timbers Lodge in Pittsburg, NH and fished the Conneticut River for landlocked salmon.  The cabin was nice, good times and loads of laughs were had by all the fat bastards ( all 5 of us) and the fishing was pretty good. Now this is the time I would posts some pictures but this old fat bastard did not bring a camera or should I say I forgot!

Anyway Richard managed to bring his camrea but as far as I can tell only took & sent me one photo. Now I do not know if he did this intentionally or it was the only photo he took. Oh BTW I forgot to mention that Richard (fat bastard #5) recently went through a mid-life crisis and decided to buy a Harley. I bet he has many photos of that hog. But alas only one picture of the many fish we caught and it is held by no other that John (fay bastard #4) the other one who had a mid-life crisis a couple of years ago and also purchased a Harley. Freaking noisy machines these are! So both these guys are taking photos of each other sitting on their hogs, pretty scary.

Most of the fishing was done with tiny flies in the 16 to 20 range mostly BWO and other emergers also worked. Robert was successful using his 5WT Spey and swung (if that’s a word) streamers. I caught some on Pheasants tail bead heads  also in the 14 range. Strangely enough the weather was  perfect for BWO cloudly and cool but the hatch was sproatic at best, so switching flies was a must cause they did not key in on any particular bug. Even some caddis emergers were working. I think our best day was a cool wet afternoon, pouring rain and the fish were hitting on most any bug, good afternoon and to think were were going to stay in the cabin but at the last minute we convinced ourselves to go even though the morning was a wash out. Go figure! Fishing!

So here’s Johnnie!

All the best and good health to all in 2014

Another year past (2013) and not a bad one at that no major health issues in the family. My daughter Valli is working real hard on her PhD and will be once again going to Botswana in August 2014 check out her site at http://whereisvalli.wordpress.com. Proud of her. Jane who puts up with me is always Jane amazing the energy she has. First holidays without Cali our chocolate Lab, miss her.

All the Fat Bastards are doing great and looking forward to some good fishing and floating with the pontoons. Got some nice toys in 2013, my favourite was my bamboo Spey a Bob Clay to be exact. Check out his site http://www.riverwatchrods.com. It’s a 3 piece (two tips) 5 sided spliced ferrule Dean’s Kispiox  11′ 6/7  beautiful workmanship. And at the other end a beautiful Saracione Reel to complete the look and balance (pictures soon). Another was our wonderful trip to Montana, what a beautiful state. Now if only the winter would pass quicker already the cabin fever is setting in. At the fly bench with a new bug for the season coming (pictures soon). In the meantime I leave you with this picture!

Back from Montana

Back from Montana! Let me first start with I should have never left! Now that we have established the mood I am in let’s just say we had a great time. Personally, I had the best time at the Nelson’s  Ranch http://www.nelsonsspringcreek.com. The Nelson family Mary, Roger, Jacquie, Tucker and the delightful Morgan are the finest people that you can meet. So if you are ever  want to do some great fishing and and be treated well please book some time at the Nelson Spring Creek Ranch. And before I forget a special thanks to Des the labradorfor making my stay even more ducky (pun intended). DES the Lab

Swan Armstrong Creek

Three of the five Fat Bastards along with Howard & Wye brought with us some fine weather and managed to also get to the Yellowstone Park to open for our fishing needs. No thanks to Obama’s foolishness.

IMGP0054 - Version 2Along with the Nelon’s Spring creek we  fished the Armstrong & the DuPuy spring creeks. We also fished the Firehole River & the Beaver Medaows in the Yellowstone.

Montana

Well long time without a word or at least a written word. Pretty good for an opiniated person like myself. Anyway preparing for one of the “bucket list” events, that being fishing the Montana rivers, in particular those in and around the Bozeman, Yellowstone and such. Booked for Nelson Creek Ranch, Dupuy and Armstrong Creek amongst others. So a few of the Fat Bastards (myself, Bruce & Robert) are going with two fellow fly anglers, Wye & Howard. At the moment, going through my check off list and making sure I bring the essentials.

The internal struggle of which rods to bring, second guessing yourself as to which and how many fly boxes and by the way I am perplexed as to why I tie so many flies, it must be some sort of psychological disorder, seems the you always have this nagging feeling that you somehow forgot to tie a certain fly. Crikey that feeling is annoying. Speaking of which,  the fly tying part, I have been tying some local favourites, mostly Blue ribbon Flies Shop flies check out their site; http://www.blue-ribbon-flies.com nice site & newsletter.

Here are some of the flies I am tying: More to come, I fear.

So enough for now, need a nap!

New Fat Bastard!

I am pleased to announce that a new Fat Bastard has been accepted in the fold. Fat Bastard 5 (apparently his name is Richard) due to his recent purchase of a pontoon he has been granted the pretentious prestigious  honour and will be initiated to the Fat Bastards & Curmudgeon family.

So the flotilla/armada will be one stronger when we pirate & pillage our way through rivers & ponds!

Steelhead Skeena & Copper Rivers

Steelhead

Landed!

Well sorry for the lack of posting but life has a way of getting in the way. Just back from Terrace, BC in particular the Skeena & Copper (Zoymoetz) River.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The Fat Bastards (3 of the 4 renowned fishing legends in their own minds)) spent 6 guided days (Derek that’s him in the picture above holding the net) on the Skeena. The guiding was done through  Jeroen Wohe proprietor of the Skeena River Lodge here’s the link

http://www.skeenariverlodge.com/  , Fat Bastard endorsed guides. Derek is a good lad and very knowledgeable and patient and most certainly has to be with us. Good coach also.

Lodge Chinook record 48" long 27" gerth.

Bruce “The Legend”  (aka: Fat Bastard III) was on fire. This puppy was 48 inches long by 27 inches in girth. You are looking at the lodge record. Bruce “the Legend” landed a slew of Steelhead also. Apparently, it had everything to do with dressing appropriately, and a good stool softener! He is also know in the west coast fishing circles as the “fish whisperer”.

Robert Fat Bastard II  was, excuse the expression, right behind with this Skeena Chinook puppy.  Not much smaller than “The Legend’s”. As you can clearly see not appropriately dressed and does not need any stool softeners.

More to come in a few days.

Nota Bene: For excellent lodging & food and great folks, if you like those British types. A Fat Bastards endorsed lodge; www.pioneerfishing.com

Pulaski NY

Our first trip to the Salmon River, Pulaski NY was successful. Lots of laughs, good food, good wine some good and much-needed R & R. The Douglaston Run was not on fire but that’s fishing. I swung some flies with my Spey and it seems that I was the only one to do so. I caught a few small silver steelies and a landlocked salmon. Of course, as all fishing stories go, I briefly had a big silver brut on and lost it. The other curmudgeons  decided to single rod, whimps! Both Bruce & John caught their share of steelies, and some landlockes, small ones but nevertheless nice fish. Good to see that the Atlantic’s are there and making a good show of themselves. Richard had the good hand and caught some nice steelies between 5 & 9 LBS (2 to 4 KGS). Of course I had to show junior where to fish. Some pictures of Richards’ catch & of course all released steelies.  All faces are concealed to protect the innocent. Good time had by all.

Goin’ Fishing

So next week April 17th to the 19th me and 3 other codgers are off to the our first Spey Steelhead fishing of the season. Off to the  Douglaston Run on the Salmon River in Pulaski,  New York.  Should be fun hope the steelies are in and plentiful, otherwise it will be a much-needed RR.  It will be great to wet some line and swing some Spey flies with the Spey Rods. I’ll get a report in when I’m back hopefully some pictures.

More stuff we like

Apparently one of the Fat Bastards is going through a mid-life crisis and went and purchased a Harley Davidson. Nice bike too much noise. Trailer queens these things, ride them for 5 km and then spend 6 hours cleaning it.  Whatever floats your boat! Speaking of floating, nice sec-way; Pontooning, floats down rivers  the “Fat Bastards Flotilla” is ready for this years’ adventures. Freakin’ winter in Quebec is far to long.
