Sad Day

Short post today, sad day in our family our dog Cali (chocolate Labrador) has passed away. Fifteen great years of fun and amusement. I know that all will say this about their dogs and appropriately so but Cali was special  in many ways. We had to euthanize her, her auto immune was killing her. It was very sad but peaceful. We held her until her last breath.

Some Cooper River Steelhead & such

Another late posting but what the heck, how does that saying go better late than…just too lazy or something to that effect.

Beautiful Steelie, no words needed.

What we have here is a shot of our tools!

Of course some tools are better than others, just saying.

Must have shots of the river and the fools fishing it.

Steelhead Skeena & Copper Rivers

Steelhead

Landed!

Well sorry for the lack of posting but life has a way of getting in the way. Just back from Terrace, BC in particular the Skeena & Copper (Zoymoetz) River.

The Fat Bastards (3 of the 4 renowned fishing legends in their own minds)) spent 6 guided days (Derek that’s him in the picture above holding the net) on the Skeena. The guiding was done through  Jeroen Wohe proprietor of the Skeena River Lodge here’s the link

http://www.skeenariverlodge.com/  , Fat Bastard endorsed guides. Derek is a good lad and very knowledgeable and patient and most certainly has to be with us. Good coach also.

Lodge Chinook record 48" long 27" gerth.

Bruce “The Legend”  (aka: Fat Bastard III) was on fire. This puppy was 48 inches long by 27 inches in girth. You are looking at the lodge record. Bruce “the Legend” landed a slew of Steelhead also. Apparently, it had everything to do with dressing appropriately, and a good stool softener! He is also know in the west coast fishing circles as the “fish whisperer”.

Robert Fat Bastard II  was, excuse the expression, right behind with this Skeena Chinook puppy.  Not much smaller than “The Legend’s”. As you can clearly see not appropriately dressed and does not need any stool softeners.

More to come in a few days.

Nota Bene: For excellent lodging & food and great folks, if you like those British types. A Fat Bastards endorsed lodge; www.pioneerfishing.com

Pulaski NY

Our first trip to the Salmon River, Pulaski NY was successful. Lots of laughs, good food, good wine some good and much-needed R & R. The Douglaston Run was not on fire but that’s fishing. I swung some flies with my Spey and it seems that I was the only one to do so. I caught a few small silver steelies and a landlocked salmon. Of course, as all fishing stories go, I briefly had a big silver brut on and lost it. The other curmudgeons  decided to single rod, whimps! Both Bruce & John caught their share of steelies, and some landlockes, small ones but nevertheless nice fish. Good to see that the Atlantic’s are there and making a good show of themselves. Richard had the good hand and caught some nice steelies between 5 & 9 LBS (2 to 4 KGS). Of course I had to show junior where to fish. Some pictures of Richards’ catch & of course all released steelies.  All faces are concealed to protect the innocent. Good time had by all.

Goin’ Fishing

So next week April 17th to the 19th me and 3 other codgers are off to the our first Spey Steelhead fishing of the season. Off to the  Douglaston Run on the Salmon River in Pulaski,  New York.  Should be fun hope the steelies are in and plentiful, otherwise it will be a much-needed RR.  It will be great to wet some line and swing some Spey flies with the Spey Rods. I’ll get a report in when I’m back hopefully some pictures.

More stuff we like

Apparently one of the Fat Bastards is going through a mid-life crisis and went and purchased a Harley Davidson. Nice bike too much noise. Trailer queens these things, ride them for 5 km and then spend 6 hours cleaning it.  Whatever floats your boat! Speaking of floating, nice sec-way; Pontooning, floats down rivers  the “Fat Bastards Flotilla” is ready for this years’ adventures. Freakin’ winter in Quebec is far to long.

Stuff I like

Okay this is strictly personal no endorsements here. Basically this is stuff I like and Meiser Rods are it. Plenty of good rods out there but for the buck bang, quality and casting not much comes close. Here’s a link http://meiserflyrods.com/.

The site is also chuck full of good information. So have a look see.  CheersSpey Rod

Trout Unlimited

Trout Unlimited Canada has a new member, the Chateauguay River in Athelstan, Quebec.  I grew up fly fishing that river, good to see that some much needed looking after will happen in a sort of offical way by some decent and concerned folks. Here’s a link; take a look see. http://www.tucanada.org/index.asp?p=2139
